Examples at Wide Apertures: Mule Deer at Dawn
These examples from the Sigma FE 105mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art were shot handheld using IBIS at full aperture or close to it. Often it is better to use f/1.8 or f/2 for more even illumination across the frame and a pop in micro contrast, so most shots are at f/1.8.
I’ve included several similar images because the foreground and background bokeh rendition is a little different for each image.
I was disappointed in the ability of the Sony A7R IV to focus on the deer, but I forgot to use animal Eye AF. After all, they did wake me up at 5:30 AM or so. The lens tends to seek and fail too often, and I have observed this before. Maybe non-Sony lenses have issues? Ultimately I was forced to go into magnified Live View and focus there—not an efficient process, but it does also eliminate the tendency of the camera to find bushes and similar instead of the eyes and is deadly accurate.
