Sony / Zeiss FE 24-70mm f/4 OSS Vario-Tessar

Sony FE 24-70mm f/4 OSS Vario-Tessar Introduction

The Sony FE 24-70mm f/4 OSS Vario-Tessar is a mid-range zoom for use on Sony E-mount cameras like the Sony A7 and A7R. Covering a full-frame sensor, it can also be used on APS-C cameras with E-mount, e.g., Sony NEX.

At a quite slow (dark) f/4 it is not an ideal lens for shooting at dusk and similar conditions (shutter speed as well as focusing in dim light), but as an all-arounder, it offers a good zoom range along with optical image stabilization.

The f/4 aperture keeps it compact, but at 3.3X the weight of the Sony/Zeiss 35/2.8 and 1.5X that of the 55/1.8, it feels subjectively quite different in the hand and around the neck. While the zoom has more range, it is 2 1/3 stops and 1 stop slower (darker) than those two lenses, and yet together the weight is about the same—something to ponder when considering the 'kit'.
