Focus Shift Aperture Series@ 38mm: Picnic Table (A7R II)

This scene is mundane, but it turns out to show quite a strong focus shift to the foreground with the Sony FE PZ 28-135mm f/4G OSS at the 38mm setting. The several other example pages show similar behavior.

The focus shift with stopping down is pronounced, a negative for still photography. While the Sony 28-135/4G holds sharpness at the point of focus (barely), the zone of focus shifts visibly forward. The shift is significant enough that the shape of the image changes slightly, which might be an issue for video if the aperture is changed mid-stream. See the crops.

The main and more problematic issue is that focus shift is a challenge in anticipating how the zone of focus will intersect the subject matter, in other words the visual impact of the subject versus the foreground and background, a crucial consideration for 4K video in particular, or stills—with 4K video, even the smallest focusing errors pop out as distracting.
