Sony Alpha A1

Eye AF for Portraits, Head Shots

This page looks at Eye AF on the Sony A1 for close-range portraits at f/1.4 and f/4 on a tight head shot.

Caveat: AF-C focus was inadvertantly set to “Balanced”. Subsequent effort show that Focus Priority improves results over what are seen here, though less and less-so at closer range.

Sony explicitly warns that Eye AF might not work if too close, but also states that if the head is visible it should work. Also, one of the Sony examples is very close to the magnification used here.

You cannot use the Eye AF function when the subject is too large or too small in the frame.
