Sony A1 ISO Series vs Sony A7R IV: Fruit Platter

This page looks at noise and hot pixels from ISO 100 to ISO 102400 with the Sony A1 against the Sony A7R IV.

Has another two years of sensor technology advanced image quality? Sure has.

Differences in capture noise between cameras often amount to 1/3 stop or less, whereas the shot discipline of ETTR exposure frequently dwarfs that difference under so many auto-exposure scenarios. It is very easy for auto exposure to give up a stop or even two stops of headroom.

Here, the exposures were +.7 stop relative to the camera metering and yet still fall 1/2 stop short of the available headroom as per the RawDigger histogram. The misleading Sony A1/A7R IV RGB histogram both showed substantial blow-out which was still 1/2 stop short of optimal exposure. Shooting according to the camera metering, exposures would have been about 4/3 stop short of potential, a grievous loss of headroom and a major source of unnecessary noise.
