The about $4699 Sony A7S II debuted in May 2017 as a tour de force of digital camera technology unrivalled and unmatched by anything Canon or Nikon or any other vendor has to offer, the closest thing being the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II, which is a Micro 4/3 camera (far from full frame).
The Sony A9 delivers all its functionality on full frame with a body size and weight hardly different from the Sony A7R II and siblings, but with many improvements.
