Optical Distortion for Sony FE 14mm f/1.8 GM

The Sony FE 14mm f/1.8 GM has relatively low distortion for a 14mm lens. This page shows some uncorrected vs corrected images.

Distortion is mild barrel distortion overall, generally on par with a relatively low distortion lens in the 24/28mm range, which is impressive for a 14mm lens, low enough that it can probably go uncorrected for many situations, particularly landscape photography. However, distortion increases greatly into the corners.

When necessary, the good news is that for a large central area of the frame, very little stretching need be done for distortion correction. But there will be a hit to sharpness near the edges and especially to the corners—see the crops further below.
