Sony supplies fantasy MTF, meaning MTF that is computed from a computer model (not measured with a real lens), does not specify the spectral balance (green light, white light?), and worst of all, ignores diffraction, which is the dominant factor at f/8, causing a substantial loss of both overall contrast and micro contrast aka brilliance. Also, the charts only use 10 and 30 line pairs per millimeter (l[/mm), and 30 lp/mm is well below 40 lp/mm, a far better metric for high-res digital.
Still, we can learn a few things about the Sony FE 40mm f/2.5 G performance, assuming a sample held to strict quality control standards can be obtained (an uneasy assumption, based on experience over years).
