Lens flare can restrict or enhance the ability to shoot in difficult lighting conditions. This page assess the flare control of the Sony RX1R II with its built-in Zeiss 35mm f/2 Sonnar*.
Flare is sometimes an issue with modern camera lenses, so the real test is flare control under dramatic lighting, precisely where it is most important for dramatic effect.
Several primary types of flare can be seen:
- “Ghosts” or ghosting flare: localized bright reflections.
- Veiling flare: an overall reduction in lens contrast.
- Diffraction flare: starbursts or similar effects, caused by the blades of the lens diaphragm and/or subject matter itself.
In addition, there can be localized halos around high contrast areas, caused by longitudinal color or spherical aberration or other optical aberrations, particularly at wide apertures.
