Focusing Loxia

For the Sony A7 series cameras, configure a the C1 button to zoom in and stay there). By so doing, it is quick to zoom in and focus, then press the shutter release to exit, compose, shoot.

In the field, focusing at f/2.8 was determined to be ideal (but focus at f/2 if exposing at f/2). That’s because f/2 dispenses with some wide-open haze, increasing contrast and sharpness to nearly peak levels, which makes focusing a breeze.

Open-to-focus + close-to-shoot — Like its Zeiss ZM sibling, the Loxia lenses have mechanical aperture control: turning the aperture ring stops down the lens so that what you see is what you get, both for focusing and exposure. The aperture always stays where the ring says it is; the lens does not stay open at maximum aperture as with a DSLR lens or conventional mirrorless lens. The approach to focusing is thus as follows:
