Zeiss Touit 32mm f/1.8 Planar

Examples: Portraiture (NYC Model, Sony NEX-7)

These examples were shot on the 24-megapixel Sony NEX-7.

The circumstances were a bit harried due to competing with a dozen other photographers, and one has to be impressed with the skill it takes for a model to manage such things. Nor could I control the background and nary a reflector for fill light as is my wont; well, one does as best one can.

The main issue I ran into was the difficulty of using the NEX-7 as expertly as my Nikon D800; camera shake was much more of a problem due to the small size of the camera, with the results of motion blur at the lower shutter speeds*.

Also, the NEX-7 has the irritating behavior of tending to focus further behind than intended, so I was forced to shoot at f/5.6 for most images for depth of field (still not quite enough), leading to those lower shutter speeds. And then its flash sync just did not perform well even at -3 stops compensation, making the images say “flash”, so that didn’t help the lighting. The experience was frustrating and kept reminding me of how much I like shooting my DSLR for this sort of thing.
