Blur Caused by Demosaicing

Every camera today except the Sigma cameras utilizing the Foveon X3 sensor utilize a variant of the Bayer Pattern matrix, in which (usually) half the pixels are green, a quarter are blue, and a quarter red (sometimes there are similar variants).

With a Bayer matrix, each photosite is monochrome (one color only); 50% of the photosites have a green filter, 25% have a red filter, and 25% have a blue filter. In practice, each color photosite has some “bleed” and will respond partially to other colors.

The process of turning this colored grid into RGB digital photographs is called demosaicing.
