Cat’s Eye Effect

The cat’s eye effect comes into play increasingly towards the corner of the frame, appearing any time there is sufficient contrast along with out of focus blurs.

As shown below, out of focus specular blurs change from round in central areas to inceasingly ovalized shapes towards the corner areas. The shape can be seen by looking through the rear of any lens; it is the lens barrel blocking the cone of light as seen from the outer areas of image frame.
