Dual-Focus Focus Shift : Nikon 45mm f/2.8P (Dolls, Canon 5DM3)

This dual-focus aperture series shows how focus shift can degrade image quality when stopped down as far as f/8 or f/11. Focus shift is caused by spherical aberration.

The Nikon 45mm f/2.8 P was used on the Canon 5D Mark III (with lens adapter). The 45/2.8 is a very simple Tessar design with only 4 lens elements in 3 groups, which allows few corrections. In particular, spherical aberration is unavoidable and this leads to focus shift.


Images presented in the ProPhotoRGB color space in order to preserve the bright red tones. Use a colorspace-aware browser or the images will look quite dull and lifeless.
