Using the Dehaze filter for Monochrome Images

The Dehaze filter in Adobe Camera Raw has the effect of increasing contrast in both highlights and shadows. While its effects quickly become overwraught with color images, in monochrome it can be highly effective at dealing with relatively low-contrast subjects.

Using negative values, the Dehaze filter can also decrase contrast for a hazy effect. Examples of both usages are shown here.

For example as shown below, there is a lot of high-key detail of low contrast, to the point of making it difficult to see the animal tracks and subtle ripples in the sand. If during a brief period of the day one manages to get the sun strafing such detail just right—great. But so many times the light is not favorable and can never be favorable due to the angle and position. Here, I could only have had the balance of tones I wanted mid-day; later it would have gone mostly shadowed from the winter solstice sun. The Dehaze filter delivers the contrast and detail I was seeking.
