Digital sensors generate noise (speckles, streaks, etc) for a variety of reasons. On this page the reduction of chroma (color) noise in Adobe Camera Raw is explored.

Noise reduction for chroma noise generally does not impact acuity / micro contrast, unlike the reduction of luminance (brightness) noise*. Thus, chroma noise reduction is a realistic approach to raw file conversion as a matter of course for high ISO images, improving the color purity and visual impact of noise while leaving acuity of fine details largely untouched.
