Zeiss ZF.2 100mm f/2 Makro-Planar T*

Examples in White Mountains and Death Valley / D3x

These examples were shot with the Zeiss ZF.2 100mm f/2 Makro-Planar on the 24MP Nikon D3x in northern Death Valley National Park, and the White Mountains of California, November 2010.

Although it’s ostensibly a macro lens, I rarely use the 100/2 Makro-Planar for macro work; that’s not my thing and it’s a fantastic all-around lens. Be sure to focus it very precisely and be rewarded with corner-to-corner crispness— use Live View if your camera has it.

Pavement ends

My favorite sign wherever I see it, though no one thought of a Pavement Begins counterpart. What kind of idiot needs such a sign anyway, or thinks to put one up? I like it nonetheless.

Ten miles or so to go to Eureka Dunes, visible in the distance. Death Valley Road from Big Pine is paved to this point. A few more miles of good solid dirt, then an unpleasant washboard rocky dirt road to 700-foot-tall Eureka Dunes. The dunes form because the wind is forced to drop its load of sand as it approaches the surrounding mountains. Climb them if you visit, and feel the sand in your toes, and hear the singing sand near the top, if conditions are right. Camping here is crappy (dusty), so camp away from the dunes themselves, or sleep in your car.
