MTF Chart
The 135/2 APO-Sonnar Distagon is an outstanding performer wide open at f/2, with very high contrast for coarse and fine structures throughout the frame. The MTF charts strongly suggest a complete absence of focus shift.
Field curvature
The “wave” in the chart for the 135mm f/2 APO-Sonnar is mild, but can be seen in real images on high resolution digital cameras on suitable subjects such as the Nikon D800/D800E.
Stopping down to f/5.6 largely equalizes the MTF curve for the finest details. Whether the “wave” is due to field curvature requires field tests to determine.
