Carl Zeiss ZF.2 15mm f/2.8 Distagon T*

15/2.8 Vignetting

Vignetting into the corners is quite noticeable wide open. Stopping down to f/4 helps greatly, with f/5.6 delivering nicely even frame illumination, with less than one stop darkening to the corners. The remaining vignetting at f/5.6 and beyond is natural vignetting and cannot be helped.

Practical considerations

At f/2.8, vignetting is a legitimate concern when the corners already contain dark areas and/or areas that are relatively dark with monochromatic color.

Stop down to f/4 to get much of the improvement, suitable for most images. Stop down to f/5.6 and frame illumination is now excellent. Stopping down further yields only the barest minimum of improvement in the extreme corners.

Since sharpness is so good at f/2.8, one can use the vignetting characteristics in a manner akin to a neutral density filter, e.g. bright white clouds or the sun in the corners.
