Overall contrast for coarse and medium structures is outstanding wide open, which is what gives the 18/3.5 Distagon its “snap”, making wide open shooting rewarding.
Stopping-down the 18/3.5 Distagon will show a significant increase in micro contrast and also counter the effects of astigmatism, which degrades fine details (varies by subject matter to some extent). Various aberrations conspire to produce relatively strong astigmatism at f/8, not at all unusual for a lens of this focal lens and quite common to this degree in fine Leica M wide angle designs.
Field curvature
If the MTF declines notably, is this the result of field curvature, astigmatism, what?
