Correcting Color Shading Using Photoshop Masks

This page discusses how to neutralize the off-center color cast using Photoshop layers and masks. While the Nikon D3 was the 'taking' camera, the technique applies equally to any camera + lens combination.

Using a reference frame, I developed two photo filter adjustment layers for Nikon D3 images shot at f/8. While the adjustments should work for all apertures, results will vary at wider apertures where the chief ray angle is less dominant than all rays which don’t necessarily converge quite the same.

The adjustments here should be accurate to within 1 point in Lab mode, and are in 16-bit mode for best quality. Lenses and conditions vary (and there could be sensor nonlinearity), so the layers can be tweaked slightly if you’d like to over or under compensate. As well, specific lenses can be slightly more or less symmetric to each corner. A custom approach is best for getting it just s and that means at least for a particular camera + lens, since the sensor response varies widely between cameras. They should also work for other lenses too— modify the amount of correction in the blue and cyan photo filter layers.
