Zeiss Milvus 21mm f/2.8 Distagon

MTF for Milvus 21/2.8

The 21/2.8 Distagon shows very high MTF for a 21mm lens; it is exceptionally well corrected. Even the wide-open f/2.8 MTF curves would be considered excellent for a 21mm lens stopped down to f/8. This makes it eminently suitable for shooting at dusk, night, etc.

The 21/2.8 Distagon is close to being diffraction-limited in the central area wide open at f/2.8, or more precisely its performance in the central area drops when stopped down to f/5.6. It truly is one of the best 21mm DSLR designs ever produced, and it should be in the bag of every ultra-wide shooter. However, beware even small sensor-to-lens-mount misalignment issues, because a precision 21mm lens is extremely sensitive to less than perfect camera alignment. Ditto for banging/dropping higih performance lenses and/or stressing the lens mount by impact, which can subtly warp it.
