Zeiss ZF.2 25mm f/2.8 Distagon T*

MTF Chart

Mouse over to see f/5.6 compared with f/2. Near infinity focus, stopping down the 25/2.8 will show a moderate increase in contrast, but resolved detail is unlikely to change in any perceivable way (excepting depth of field). Shoot it at f/2.8 with confidence.

Like many wide angle lenses, astigmatism (dashed lines) is fairly high for fine detail, which on high resolution digital cameras can degrade the crispness of some images. However, this astigmatism and the “wave” at f/5.6 are due to field curvature; 3-dimensional images are likely to see outstanding MTF values for the curved field, which is just fine on “real” images. See the Zeiss factory note for the 28/2 Distagon on this issue.
