Aperture Series: Bristlecone Trunks (Nikon D800E)
The 36-megapixel Nikon D800E used here.
The backlit bristlecones series showed the brilliance of the Zeiss 25mm f/2 Distagon at a moderate and fairly uniform distance. This example is a “deep 3D” example in which the placement of focus and depth of field are influential factors.
It is particularly attractive wide open for its combination of high sharpness and contrast over the central 2/3 of the frame combined with its vignetting.
Brightness
Images here were processed with exposure to open up the tree trunks for satisfactory brightness on the main interest, the tree trunks. The white rock in places were let go to pure white or nearly so; this actually is consistent with perception: the very bright conditions require sunglasses for comfort at this high altitude and those rocks are indeed very bright even to the eye. The raw file contains full detail and it is actually all there even here as presented, simply very bright.
