Zeiss Otus 28mm f/1.4 APO-Distagon

Overview of Otus 28/1.4 APO-Distagon

The Zeiss Otus 28mm f/1.4 is the third Otus lens to arrive (late 2015, delivery Q2 2016), following the 55mm f/1.4 APO-Distagon (late 2013) and 85mm f/1.4 APO-Planar (mid 2014). Fit and finish and ultra high performance meet the same high standards as its siblings.

The Otus 28/1.4 APO-Distagon is huge: the sheer size and weight of the Otus 28/1.4 is the first thing one notices besides the ultra high grade fit and finish.

Focusing

The use of Live View is wonderful with the Otus 28/1.4. But to focus it with a modern DSLR optical viewfinder with a focusing screen designed for autofocus, the hit rate will be low at wide apertures; these modern focusing screens cannot “see” more than f/2.8 at best, and thus they are awful for manual focus accuracy (unless well stopped down). Hence the need for a DSLR with an EVF option, or the need to use the rear LCD with a focusing loupe. The foregoing applies to the other Otus models as well.
