Overview of Milvus 50/1.4
The Zeiss Milvus 50mm f/1.4 Distagon is an all new optical design, the first of two lenses to debut in autumn of 2015 (the other being the Zeiss Milvus 85mm f/1.4 Planar).
The Milvus 50mm /1.4 Distagon replaces the venerable but rather optically modest 50mm f/1.4 Planar. The 50/1.4 Planar exhibits spherical aberration, focus shift and substantial field curvature to a degree that makes it troublesome for high resolution digital, although it is a very high performer once stopped down to f/4 and beyond. The Milvus 50/1.4 is a major performance upgrade in that it all but eliminates focus shift and spherical aberration, and greatly reduces field curvature over its 50/1.4 predecessor, and competes with the very best 50/1.4 designs.
