ZF.2 Otus 85mm f/1.4 APO-Planar

Bokeh Effects when Defocused for Otus 85/1.4 APO-Planar

Shot with 36-megapixel Nikon D810 (mid-2014).

This special series shows the bokeh in both foreground and background when the lens is set to f/1.4 and defocused, showing us the following behaviors:

Defocusing a lens is a demanding test that shows its mettle in terms of its point spread function, correction for color aberrations and more, particularly an f/1.4 lens.

The Coastal Optics 60mm f/4 UV-VIS-IR APO macro can be defocused with no signs of secondary color aberration (completely neutral), see What Perfect Correction for LOCA Looks Like in MSI). But it is a 3-stops-slower f/4 lens consisting mostly of fluorite elements that requires f/8 for full sharpness across the frame. But even at f/5.6 it is outperformed by the Otus 85/1.4 APO-Planar at f1.4 in terms of sharpness and contrast and curvature of field and flare control—not a contest.
