Flare and Sunstars with Otus 85/1.4 APO-Planar
The Otus 85mm f/1.4 APO-Planar controls both ghosting and veiling flares supremely well. It is in another league over most all 85/90mm lenses. This is true at all apertures and with the sun in the frame, or just outside a corner or edge.
Indeed, if one compares one-stop-slower Leica M 90mm f/2 APO to the Otus 85/1.4 APO-Planar, the Leica lens is a hazy white-out disaster under circumstances in which the Otus suffers only low-level veiling flare.
The Otus is unrivalled by any lens in its range for flare control, in spite of its f/1.4 speed. Extensive field shooting under a wide variety of circumstances and the full aperture range confirms this behavior is consistent and reliable no matter what.
