Portraits and Focus Accuracy (RX1)
UPDATE: testing of the Sony RX1R in August 2013 (a year later) delivered a very different experience: fast and accurate autofocus proved so good that I rarely resorted to manual focus. Sony has apparently tweaked the RX1R model (and presumably the RX1) in beneficial ways.
For the first image below, I had taken my daughters for a pre-Christmas hike along the creek, figuring the RX1 would deliver some nice portraits, but without the weight and bulk of my Nikon D800E DSLR.
I was rewarded with some pleasing images, but also some backfocused images, the very same behavior that even on a tripod with a fixed and unmoving subject had previously ruined my efforts (a comparison). I mentally wrote off that first inexplicable error as a random camera oddity; every camera should get one free pass after all.
