Flare
Like it 35mm sibling, the Leica 50mm f/2 APO-Summicron-SL ASPH is prone to severe flare issues when a bight light source is just out of the frame as well as when the sun is in the frame. Some images severely affected by veiling flare.
Shooting towards the sun makes it an absolute requirment that the front lens element be shaded.
The behavior is at its worst precisely in the situations I am most likely to shoot in—wonderful backlightingin the outdoors, dramatic lighting.

Lens shade in use on all examples, and no filter was used, absolutely spotless front lens element with brand-new lens. All exposures EV-matched (identical exposure).
