Leica SL3: Lens Options

This page discusses lens options for the Leica SL3.

Lens selection is limited on the Leica SL3 as compared to a Sony A7R V; the lens line is more akin to a medium format system than a 35mm system in depth and breadth.

There is far less focal length range, far fewer brands, zero high quality super telephoto lenses past 90mm, all with sky-high prices, sometimes justified (the APO-Summicron lineup), and sometimes not. The system is completely out of the question for some types of photography.

M lenses

The 47-megapixel sensor of the Leica SL2 was too demanding for Leica M lenses*. On the 60MP SL3, few if any M lenses are up to the task and all have to be stopped-down to f/6.3 to f/8 to work to their best whereupon diffraction dulling cuts cuts brilliance very noticeably by f/8.
