Fujifilm GF 55/1.7: Flare, Shaded and Unshaded

This page looks at just how inadequate the lens shade is on the Fujifilm GF 55mm f/1.7. That’s true of most lenses since they would otherwise be large and unwieldly and rectangular and not very popular.

It is critical to shade the front lens element. The difference is garbage vs outstanding.

Example: Granite Dome, Yosemite

One image is trash, with wicked veiling flare destroying overall image contrast, along with ghosting flares. The other is outstanding.

The lens hood was mounted in both cases. The difference is that I shaded the front lens element with the good image.
