Leica 100mm f/2 Summicron-S ASPH

Aperture Series: Aspen Amid Pines (S006)

This series shot deep in a canyon just before sunset. The light was only moderately blue due to reflected light off the opposite canyon wall, but it also contains a blue component from the shade.

This series show sharpness, but also bokeh characteristics and secondary color aberrations.

Aspen Among Pines

Adobe Camera Camera Raw 9.1 (441). ACR settings. Camera Profile = Embedded. No lens corrections were used.

Just stepping back and looking at visual impact, at f/2 the image is already impressive. While most of the scene is out of focus, the aspen tree at center has been singled out and has very good sharpness at f/2. This is why one buys an f/2 lens (versus a slower lens), but the autofocus has to deliver the goods. Here it nailed the focus, though a second and perhaps better composition was ruined by front-focusing three feet or so. Well, a camera that cannot consistently focus is a nightmare to work with in the field.
