Metering, Observations Under Mountain Field Conditions

This page covers my field observations while shooting in the mountains having scenes with mixes of everything from newly-green Aspen trees to blindingly-white snow fields. Unavoidable mixtures requiring constant vigilance as to exposure.

Under such conditions, Nikon Z8 metering is highly unreliable for obtaining a good exposure. It frequently blows-out large sections of snow or it turns snow to gray, grossly underexposing. I found it almost impossible to rely on Z8 metering, regardless of mode.
