Approaching Eureka Dunes at dusk [Nikon D3x]
Eureka Dunes in norther Death Valley National Park are the largest dunes in the continental USA, standing about 700 feet high over the surrounding plain— huge, taking some effort to hike to the top where one can experience the “singing sands” if conditions are right. It is a ~10 mile bumpy drive into Eureka Dunes from Big Pine (once the pavement ends), but well worth the trip. Staying nearby is not recommended, due to the fine grit that gets into everything.
I apparently focused a little too closely here, since the distance is not quite as sharp as I’d have liked and the foreground is very sharp. I should have used f/11, or focused a bit farther away.
