Backup Battery Power During a Power Outage, Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)
We recently suffered a 6-hour power outage, a major irritant being on a tight schedule for me to get a year’s worth of accounting done. Normally I could just continue on battery backup, but I must do the accounting work on my iMac 5K (macOS Catalina precludes the Mac Pro being used—thank you to the geniuses at Apple for the “upgrade”).
The APC-brand uninterruptible power supply (UPS) performanced flawlessly for the Mac Pro.
But the knock-off CyberPower unit failed miserably in 3 ways: (1) at first, failed to work at all and could not be turned on after the power failure, (2) later when I got some power temporarily I was able to turn it on but then as the power jacked off again, its lifespan was about 10 minutes which was a tiny fraction of its claimed life for the load I had on it, (3) a nasty buzz from the iMac 5K on the CyberPower unit indicating non sine-wave power (it is claimed to be pure sine wave but obviously that is BS), In other words, a total piece of shit. It is a relatively new unit, so there is just no excuse for its multiple problems. Accordingly, I can no longer recommend CyberPower.
So I’ve just ordered a couple more APC units which went on sale today only APBR1500MS. Make sure you get pure sine wave power, which these APC units have (I’ve used APC for 15 year sor so).
