Four 28mm Lenses on Leica SL2: a Dumpster Fire and a Gem

A 4-way comparison at 28mm on the Leica SL2 is coming later today. The Leica SL2 ruined my first attempt with its error-prone spot-AF focusing (highly misleading cross regularly selects the background, be careful!). Worse, there appears to be no way to focus stopped down a bit with the SL2—a major design defect IMO.

Whatever the sharpness drawbacks from excessive distortion with the Leica 28mm f/2 APO-Summicron-SL ASPH, it’s a gem by comparison, eclipsing the other three lenses, and the only really usable lens of the four. I’ll explain and show why in my comparison, saving you a ton of disappointment, for if you are going to shoot L-mount, you have to pay up.
The Zeiss Otus 28mm f/1.4 APO-Distagon might be interesting optically, but I don’t have the Leica R adapter SL for it, and it is impractical anyway (size, weight, awkward balance with adapter). And it is not going to match the 28/2 APO-SL.
