Leica M11: Conclusions

re: Leica M11

Leica M11

I’ve wrapped up my Leica M11 Monochrom review, with conclusions now added. It’s a very fine camera, with unique abilities.

Any remaining questions? I have it for another 2 days, then it goes back.

Regrettably I did not get to the mountains to shoot with it, but I covered the key things, and especially I established just how critical lens performance is to exploiting that 60MP sensor.

Reader interest was... muted at best.

Which in the end matches my own feelings about it—it’s an excellent choice if you are a monochrome-focused shooter, particularly at high ISO. But barring that intense focus on monochrome, the huge expense, the extra body to carry and the mental 'competition' seeking out images good for B&W vs color (if one does both)... it ends up being 'confusing' in a sense. The ultimate niche camera.

Add in the ability to make strong monochrome images from a Sony A7R V or similar (and superior images when pixel shift can be used due to better tonal mapping), and that initial itch for a 60MP monochrome sensor is now well scratched.
