diglloydTools cross-platform Java tools: Data Integrity, Image Organization, Wipe Data, Extended File Attributes

Background

My diglloydTools applications have run their course for 15 years now: DiskTester, IntegrityChecker, MemoryTester.

Going forward, these Intel-native tools are deprecated;. While they still run and work fine and through macOS Ventura, they will never be updated.

diglloydTools, cross-platform Java tools

All these new tools are written in the Java programming language (no relationship to JavaScript), and thus can run on Mac/Windows/Linux/NAS. They are tools for a professional workflow, no eye candy here.

Command line tools, but don’t be intimidated—drag-n-drop from the Finder is super easy. For example for verifying data integrity:

icj verify <drag stuff here>

Reliable and fast, an outstanding choice to base a workflow on. Moreover, Java has an outstanding track record of not breaking functionality, so they should run for decades to come*. Therefore, an outstanding choice to incorporate into workflow, especially data integrity proofs.

* Unlike today’s crapified every-changing continually breaking software with its constant updates to fix problems.

IntegrityChecker Java ("icj")

Cross-platform (Mac, Windows, Linux, NAS, etc) IntegrityChecker Java was introduced several years ago, and has supplanted IntegrityChecker. It is much more useful/powerful and far faster than its native predecessor (up to 21 GiB/sec on the 2023 Mac Pro M2 Ultra).

DiskTester Java ("dtj") — early access

DiskTester Java ("dtj") is now available as part of the download. It offers performance tests and related commands, for example to create performance graphs of hard drives or SSD, check RAID performance, sequential read/write performance, speed of reading files, etc.

Imaging tools ("img") — early access

Imaging tools ("img") is now now available as part of the download. I developed it to address my own needs and I will be adding more commands and capabilities.

  • Extract EXIF and store it as an extended file attributes.
  • Rename raw files to include key capture information.
  • Fix/update image file dates (RAW, JPG, etc) to match EXIF info.
  • Organize focus stacks into folders using sequence numbers* in EXIF.
  • Organize aperture series into folders.
  • Organize related images into folders.

These capabilities have already saved me many hours in just one trip/shoot, by automatically folderizing aperture series and focus stacks.

* Nikon has a unbelievable oversight in not inserting a Sequence Number into raw files, unlike both Sony and Fujifilm. For that reason, no tool can detect focus stacks with Nikon NEF files.

General tools ("tj") — early access

General tools ("tj") is now now available as part of the download. Wipe files and free space, fix broken file dates, remove pesky ".DS_Store" files, more to come.

jattr for extended file attributes — early access

jattr is a tool for working with extended file attributes. Faster and more versatile than the built-in 'xattr' tool, but does not write new attributes (thought it can clean/delete them).
