Happy New Year to the ancient bristlecone pines, some vigorous and living in this scene, along with this standing monument to their tenacity, at a likely 5000 years old but with 500 to 1000 years or so still to go before it topples from erosion and very slow rot, and finally disappears in another 5000 years. The entire span of human civilization made visible in a sculpture of wood, and with society but the blink of an eye.
