3rd Sample of the Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II — Good/Symmetric on the Long End
re: Reader Comment: Zoom Lens Sample Variation especially the Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II
A reader and friend loaned me his Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II. It is leaps and bounds better at the long end compared to the two brand-new samples I have, with his sample showing ideal symmetry at the long end. He got lucky with his sample. Can you count on luck like that?
I’ll be showing the performance of his sample soon, at 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 70mm.
They send all the bad samples to diglloyd? No, this is B&H Photo, and the loaner orders are treated like all other customer orders—no special treatment.
What are your odds of a good sample? Hard to say, but I’m sticking with my "1 in 5" prediction. The two samples I received are unacceptable at the long end. Of the two samples an associate received, one is really bad and the other maybe OK. Throwing in this latest example, that yields 1 in 5 , and at best 2 in 5.
Sony quality control seemingly needs serious attention, since even though this small sample size is insufficient for statistical characterization, there should be no way the two samples I received should have ever left the factory.
A perfectly reasonable supposition is that lenses exit the assembly line and are boxed with only rudimentary checks. I’d be delighted for Sony to dispute that, and then provide details on how the turds that I received were verified good before shipping.
