The Canon 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS is new offering in 2009 from Canon, presumably Canon’s answer to Nikon’s 105mm f/2.8 VR.
The unusually high number of elements for a “prime” lens (15 elements in 10 groups), the 100/2.8L is probably well corrected in a variety of ways, the main question being whether it can hold its performance from the 1:1 range out to infinity; some macro lenses perform not so well at infinity.
Overall image quality
Because the sample I began testing was badly blurred on one side, and the second sample also had an issue, it’s difficult to make an absolute conclusion about the 100/2.8L, but I think I have a good read on the lens, see the conclusions.
