40mm: 24-70/2.8L II vs 24-70/4L II vs 40/2.8 STM (MTB, Canon 5DM3)
Shot with the Canon 5D Mark III at ISO 100.
- The EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II used here was one of the top 5% of around 80 lenses tested by LensRentals.com. However, this sample is different than the one shot in the 2012 review pages and thus might not perform the same (but my testing at swap-time showed it to be as good as the other).
- The EF 24-70mm f/4L IS was brand-new out of the box.
- The EF 40mm f/2.8 STM is a personal favorite pancake lens which has seen light use for a few months.
Focusing was done using 10X Live View and contrast detect autofocus, confirmed by eye as spot-on (Canon’s CDAF is excellent). The f/4 aperture of the 24-70/4L II does make precise decisions on pinpoint focus that much more difficult by eye, so CDAF is probably a better choice for it always.
