Nikon D850
Nikon 105mm f/2 DC

Neutral, Rear Defocus, Front Defocus from f/2 through f/11 (Bird of Paradise)

This close-range aperture series compares the effects with the Nikon 105mm f/2 DC at its zeroed position and at the F (foreground) and R (rear) positions marked 5.6. The bokeh effects are bracketed by using these settings

Bird of Paradise

Adobe Camera Raw 10.4.0.976: view ACR settings. Camera Profile=Adobe Color.

By f/5.6 there is little difference in background bokeh. However, sharpness on the subject is much superior with the lens zeroed (defocus control unused). This is true also at f/4, though to a lesser extent. It is fair to say that only at f/2 and f/2.8 are the effects obvious. which does not mean that f/4 and f/5.6 might be subtly different which they are: when set to R/5.6, the focus shift is strong enough that the focus lands on the orange petals, leaving the green capsule just slightly soft. For best results in terms of focus landing where desired with stopping down (focus shift), leave the lens zeroed.
