The Nikon AF-S 35mm f/1.4G is a high performance lens, but surprisingly, appears to be subject to much more field curvature than the 24/1.4G, enough that even f/8 fails to compensate fully in some areas.
The 35/1.4G appears to be a marginal choice for planar subjects, showing a strong forward field curvature that requires f/8 for satisfactory sharpness across the frame. This isn’t surprising, as many 35mm f/1.4 lenses are designed with reportage in mind. For nature scenes at infinity, the field curvature is a significant drawback, since such scenes are planar in the sense of having most subject matter at the same distance.
