MTF for Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art

Sigma publishes MTF for f/1.4 only without disclosing the type of light or focusing distance and so on. The MTF is worth discussing because it is at odds with what actual performance from the lens delivers when shot in the field.

The Nikon AF-S 105mm f/1.4E ED is a new lens released not long before the Sigma 85/1.4, and yet the Nikon 105/1.4 shows none of the odd behavior of the Sigma (and both were shot on the same camera).

MTF discussion

The Sigma MTF chart shows a world-class (for f/1.4) flatline contrast curve nearly to frames edges. Really outstanding. Theories are nice, but what about real lenses?

The Sigma MTF chart suggests that the Zeiss Milvus 85mm f/1.4 will be obviously inferior in its MTF at f/1.4, and yet field comparisons repudiate that idea.
