This aperture series looks at overall sharpness, but in particular field curvature and how it might be wise to modify the choice of focus given the behavior. Other aberrations are also looked for, such as focus shift and color fringing.

What high-resolution digital should make clear is that there is precious little depth field at f/2.8—that is a given. What is not a given is what exactly happens to peripheral sharpness wide open and stopped down—how it changes or does not change (focus shift). Focus shift appears relatively mild with stopping down, arcing forward (closer to the camera), and rearward in central areas. It’s not a an ideal scene to evaluate the behavior but some seems to be present. It is a typical tradeoff in a lens of this type.
