Fujifilm Medium Format Shooting Formats / Aspect Ratios

The Fujifilm GFX can shoot in different aspect ratios, a nice space-saving efficiency if one knows in advance that a particular shape (aspect ratio) is desired. Photographers accustomed to the 3:2 aspect ratio of DSLRs lose only 6 megapixels (51 => 45). Old-timer 4X5 shooters see only 2 megapixels loss (51 => 48).
In general, unless one is certain that the aspect ratio is desired, it makes little sense to use any of these cropping modes; shoot the whole frame and crop to taste after. That said:
- In general, the camera cropping modes serve primarily to easy viewfinder composition while shooting for that aspect ratio. If that aid is not needed it may be easier just to shoot the entire frame, centering on the desired subject matter.
- When shooting raw format (or raw + JPEG), the raw file is recorded for the entire sensor, with metadata set to indicate the cropping. During raw conversion one can reset this crop and restore the entire frame. You can “change your mind”—post-shot.
- When shooting JPEG (or raw + JPEG), the JPEG image is already cropped (raw is fully recorded but with cropping metadata).
