Focusing Protocol for Aperture Series

For years my focusing protocol for an aperture series has been “focus once and shoot the entire series”. This is premised on focus remaining stable and unchanging for each shot, e.g., apertures across an aperture series as well as stitching and bracketing. It also means that significant effort can be expended to obtain absolutely optimal focus.

However, given the unstable behavior seen with the 120mm f/4, I was unwilling to risk ruining aperture series by assuming that focusing once for the series would result in stable focus for each shot. Hence for the 2nd test sample of the GFX, autofocus was invoked for each shot for aperture series. See my GFX focusing notes for why I made this hyper rare exception to my usual protocol.
