Hasselblad X1D Sensor Size and Quality Expectations

The Hasselblad X1D-50C utilizes a 8272 X 6200 = 51.2 megapixel sensor that is 67% larger in area than a 35mm full frame sensor. It’s a nice gain in area, but note that there is a 130% gain in area going from APS-C to full frame 35mm.
The larger sensor means larger pixels which should deliver a higher S/N ratio, all other things being equal. That is, lower noise and better color discrimination should result: superior per-pixel quality.
However, sensor size and the resulting pixel area are not the only considerations: the quality of the electronics “wrapped around” the sensor also matters, as well as whether top-bin sensors are used—it’s the whole imaging pipeline. The specified 16-bit color discrimination and 14-bit dynamic range crudely capture those ideas; real pictures will tell the full story.
